After lunch this frog started surfing the net. I like looking at cartoons and it is fun to carve the caricatures. This cartoon struck my interest because of all the people playing games on the computer. The frog was carved out of 1/2 inch thick basswood.
I added a gadget so people from other countries can translate my words to their language. I'm glad that Blogger added this for us since we have a world wide audience. This is my attempt to carve a woman bust as African art. She is 6 inches tall and 2 1/2 inches wide. She is carved in cottonwood bark. I tried to do something else with the hair but it didn't work. I liked the way it came out and looks good on a corian base.
A couple of carvings in the flat plane style. Both are 4 1/2 inch tall. The eyes are two cut triangles and painted black on one side and white on the other. I did relieve the outside corner a bit. It is a simple way to do eyes.
Girard gave me a cutout of this dragon, and said, because I like to carve small things. This relief is 4 1/2 inch wide and 3 1/4 inch tall. It was a lot of fun carving as I haven't carved a dragon before.
This votive holder is carved out of cottonwood bark. The tree is 8 inches tall and 3 1/4 inches at the bottom branches. The base is 9 inches by 5 inches. I added a little bird carved out of basswood to add some contrast. I may add some detail and paint the bird later.
I've been working on a folk art carving of a Fjord horse for a class. It's 3 1/4 inches tall by 3 1/2 inches long. The wood I have is 7/8 inch thick. I like the high mane but with the saddle I had to shorten the mane. I'm lengthening the body a little on my pattern. With my shaky hands I kept a simple pattern and still kept with tradition of this carving. I wood burnt the pattern on one, it is sanded and has a natural finish. The other two I left the carving marks and they are painted with acrylics. I plan to use some other colors as well.
