Chip Carving

This carving is meant to be used to hold a bottle of wine at the dinner table or a place to store little knickknacks. The sides have only two designs. I carved one of the same designs in the wrong spot so I ended up with two instead of four different designs.  It is 6 inches across and 1 3/4 inches tall. It was in a kit so all I had to do is draw in the design and carve.

Icicle

I was away from home for a couple weeks and I took a few knives and some small pieces of wood in a small container. These icicles are 5/8 inch square by 4 inches long. I tried a staining technique I saw used on small guys. I first applied a paste wax with a bristle brush. Then used a hair dryer to melt the wax into the wood. Then I dipped the icicles into the stain and wiped them down. Although it was a lot of work it gave an interesting effect.

Chip Carved Egg

I carved a tree design to both sides of this basswood egg. The egg is 2 inches in diameter and almost 3 inches tall. I drilled a hole in the top to hold artificial flowers.

Chip Carved Bud Vase

It's nice to have a friend (Kelvin) who will turn out a bud vase on a lathe. It was cut from a 3 X 3 X 6 inch piece of basswood. I started with the 6 point star and then the two bands at the top. I thought it needed something at the bottom so I added the curved line at the bottom.

Coor's Bottle Carved

This bottle was turned by a friend for a class in Glacier he is doing. He wanted something carved on it for a go by. The basswood was excellent and was easy to carve. The bottle is the same size as a Coor's bottle.

Trinket Boxes

I wanted to start out small with my chip carving using simple designs. These two boxes are from a craft store. Some of the boxes have open grain and soft wood making it hard to carve sharp edges. I don't know what kind of wood this is but I like the brown stripes. The first trinket box is 2 1/2 inches by 2 inches. I carved a 7 point rosette on the top. The second trinket box I also carved a 7 point rosette on the top. It is 3 1/2 inch by 2 1/4 inch and 2 1/4 inch tall. On all the sides I carved a double border of positive diamond with wedge cuts. It is drawn in with 4 mm squares. A fellow carver gave me this hint on holding your chip knife at the correct angle. He cut a 50 degree angle on a small piece of 3/8 inch wood so you can lay it against the blade of your knife.
