King and Queen

The King and Queen completes the chess set that has a Christmas theme. The King represents Father Christmas. I wanted a older look of Christmas, of the time of giving without the commercial of gifts. The Queen was hard for me as I came with several choices. I like the way she turned out and is a very important figure in chess as well as life. So now it is the time to play.

Knights and Bishops

The Knights were carved as reindeer. I super glued the antlers to add some strength. It also gave a little sheen to the antlers when I painted them. The Bishops give a religious flavor for the Christmas theme of this chess set. One of my favorite times of this season is the candle light services. I enjoy the music although I'm not a good singer.

Rook

The Rook is sometimes called the Castle which I have called it. Reading history it was call a tower and it might be called that in some parts of the world. I carved the Rook as a chimney at 4 1/2 inch tall. Of coarse we know santa didn't come down the chimney to deliver toys, but the stories and songs delight us at Christmas.

Pawns

The beginning of the year I started carving a chess set. The pieces are based on the Christmas story. The pawns are 1 1/4 inch square by 4 inches tall. Both sides are the same except for the colors. One side is red and the other side is green. Carving so many pawns the faces have different looks. As the story goes these would be the helpers building toys for Santa to deliver on Christmas eve.
