This is a caricature I carved in a class at the Northwest Carving Academy in Ellensburg, Washington. The class was taught be Bob Travis. I liked the way he taught the class, he didn't carve on your piece, he was good at explaining and demonstrating the carving. It was a five day class with the fifth day painting the hobo. I included a picture of our starting point, so you can see all the work we had to do. They had many other classes and it was fun to see what the other classes were doing.

Dapper Dan
Dapper Dan is a Pete LeClair pattern. It's seven inches tall. I carved it because the head is turned. The left hand is a little to small compared to the other hand. I like the face, it has a worried look. The picture shows the face fatter than it is.

Corian Clinging Cross
Corian is a brand made for a material for counter tops. The cross is cut out with a band saw and then shaped with a sander. I used a Dremel with a sanding disk and then hand sanded it to a smoother finish. The cross has a cool feel when holding it in your hand. Corian also makes good bases for carvings, hot pots, and coffee cups.

Santa Ornament
A lady shared a picture of this Santa ornament with me. She was teaching this ornament in a class. I thought it was unique with the pine cone bottom. My cone and face are different, but it is the same idea. It is out of a 1 1/2 block, and 3 1/4 inches long.

Tex
Tex is a bottle stopper from my other class at the Rendezvous in Spokane. He doesn't have that rugged look. He looks more like the urban cowboy ready to ride the mechanical bulls to impress the ladies. He is 4 inches tall.

Hillbilly Knife
This last weekend I attended the Spokane Carvers Rendezvous. There were a lot of great classes, food, and friends. I taught a class on a folk art horse with the saddle and reins carved in. I also was able to take in two classes. The Hillbilly Knife was a 3 hour class. I finished the hair, cleaned up my cuts, glued in the knife blade and painted him at home. This is a story told to me of a great grandma who lived in the hills. She heard the chickens making some racket and took her gun to see what it was about. A chicken dropped from a tree. She thought maybe a raccoon was in the tree so she shot her gun. Well this fellow fell from the tree and went running over the hill. So she had that chicken for dinner and that rascal was still running.
